To console those who mourn in Zion,
To give them beauty for ashes,
The oil of joy for mourning,
The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
That they may be called trees of righteousness,

Gentle Giants

A few years ago we were able to go to the San Diego Zoo. As a homeschooler, this was one field trip that I had only hoped that we could get to see. Visiting the gorillas left a lasting impression on me. It was spring time and the mom's had just had their babies. I stood in amazement and watched these gentle giants with their babies. Their hands and feet were enormous compared to their babies, but they held them so tenderly. Tending to them, soothing them. It warmed my heart to see the nurturer come forth from the mom to take care of their babies.

Chuck wanted to hurry me along, normally it is the other way around; I see it, and then move on. But the troop captivated me. Seeing how all the moms were together talking amongst themselves. Even one mom was showing a struggling mom how she placed her baby on her back.

Even here, every mom needs some time to herself and her baby! Quiet time to rock, cuddle, and love on your little one!

This is just a few that I took that day.

A Mile in Her Shoes

We in society do not value others that don't have a home. But as Christians we follow Jesus, who stated, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” Matt 8:20

I read a book to the kids last year called Under the Overpass. It really challenged my thinking as a Christian and as a mom. Living in suburbia it is easy to overlook the less fortunate. This thinking somewhat remained in me even after going to Africa. We see poverty as our own doing. So why should we help out those, that put themselves in a bad situation. Every day we see homeless people on the side of the street panhandling for money in the city. Many thoughts normally go towards, they will spend it on booze or drugs. This may in fact be true, but do we just turn and pretend they are not there?

How do we reconcile our actions with our beliefs?

When I took this picture, I knew that I had something. I just didn't know what it was, until I came home and looked at it on the screen. It was her shoe that I saw, or the lack of it. I just sat there and wept. That is when I knew that I needed to see more, the beauty of her. Each of us have beauty to be revealed.

May we be gracious enough, giving enough, loving enough to help others as God leads us.

Contemplation of the backside

As a photographer, I love to look for the unusual in things. My curiosity has grown since becoming an avid photographer, or at least it has come out of the closet.

I am sure many of you know that this is the back side of a sunflower. We all love sunflowers; the yellow petals and dark centers. I was captured by the brilliant green petals and little hairs. They say there is more to a me than meets the eye. Yet, how many of us look at the back side of anything? Especially if we are going through a difficult time. Not to mention the things we miss by not seeing the whole picture. Changing our perspective can give deeper insight into our lives. On that day, it was just looking at the back of the flower instead of the front.

I hope that this week as you approach all that life throws at you, maybe seeing the backside will help.

But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Job 12: 7-8
